The Golden Slug (Keong Mas)
In the ancient
time, lived a young man named Galoran. He was respected because of his wealth
and honor. His parents were nobleman so he could live with luxury. However, he
was very wasteful and every day just squandered the wealth of his parents.
One day, his
parents died, but he did not care and continued to spend money as well as
before. Because his life was so extravagant, all the treasure that he had was
running out and he became an unemployed person. Many people sympathized with
him and offered a job. But every time he got the job, he just dallied and it
made him always be fired. Several months later, there was a wealthy widow who
interested him. He married the widow and of course, he was very happy to be
living in luxury again.
The widow had a
daughter who was very diligent and clever to weave. Her name is Jambean, a
beautiful girl and had been famous because of her weaving. However, Galoran did
not like the girl, because the girl often scolded him because of his laziness.
Finally, he threatened to torture and kill Jambean. He revealed the plan to his
wife and the wife was very sad to hear of the threat.
Hearing the
news, Jambean was very sad but she volunteered herself to be killed by her
father. She told that she wanted to be dumped into a dam and did not burry
under the ground after the death. The mother agreed and did all of her wants.
In the dam, her body and head suddenly turned into the golden slugs.
Several years
later, there are two widows who were looking for firewood. They were kindred,
the first widow named Mbok Sambega Rondo and the second called Mbok Rondo
Sembagil. When looking for the firewood in the jungle, they were very surprised
because of finding the beautiful golden slugs. They brought it and maintained
at home.
Once they
brought the snails, there was always a miracle every day. Their kitchen was
always filled with the delicious food when they came home from work. They were
very surprised, and wanted to know the person who made those foods. They pretended
to go to work and hid in the back of the house. A few moments later, there was
a beautiful girl came from the inside of the conch and she began to cook the
delicious meals.
Both widows
then secretly held and did not let the girl to get into the snail anymore. The
girl apparently was Jambean who had been killed by her father. Both widows then
allowed her to stay with them. Because of their versatility in weaving, she got
her famous back and made a handsome prince attracted. In the end, she married the
prince and lived happily.

The Legend of Malin Kundang
A long time
ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and her son
lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. Her mother was a single parent
because Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin
Kundang had to live hard with his mother
.
Malin
Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to
catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sold the
caught fish in the town. One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a
merchant's ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped
the merchant. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the
pirates.
The merchant
was so happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to
sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother
alone. Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and
was helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a
beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on
a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast
in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”. An old woman
ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s
mother.
She wanted
to hug him, released her sadness of being lonely after so long time.
Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well
dressed wife and his ship crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three
times her mother begged Malin Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At
last Malin Kundang said to her "Enough, old woman! I have never had a
mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!" After that he ordered his crews
to set sail. He would leave the old mother again but in that time she was full
of both sadness and
angriness.
Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if
he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail
.
In the
quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was
too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his
ship. He fell on a small island. It was really too late for him to avoid his
curse. Suddenly,
he turned
into a stone.

Timun Mas
Long time ago in the island of Java,
Indonesia, lived a couple of farmer. They had married for some years but
they had no children. So they prayed to a monster called Buta Ijo to give
them children. Buta Ijo was a ferocious and powerful monster. He
granted their wish on one condition. When their children had grown up,
they had to sacrifice them to Buta Ijo. He liked eating fresh meat of
human being. The farmers agreed to his condition. Several months
later the wife was pregnant.
She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Timun Emas. The farmers were happy. Timun Emas was very healthy and a very smart girl. She was also very diligent. When she was a teenager Buta Ijo came to their house. Timun Emas was frightened so she ran away to hide. The farmers then told Buta Ijo that Timun Emas was still a child. They asked him to postpone. Buta Ijo agreed. He promised to come again. The following year Buta Ijo came again. But again and again their parents said that Timun Emas was still a child.
When the third time Buta Ijo came their parents had prepared something for him. They gave Timun Emas several bamboo needles, seeds of cucumber, dressing and salt.
‘Timun, take these things’
‘What are these things?’
‘These are your weapons. Buta Ijo will chase you. He will eat you alive. So run as fast as you can. And if he will catch you spread this to the ground. Now go!’
Timun Emas was scared so she ran as quickly as she could. When Buta Ijo arrived she was far from home. He was very angry when he realized that his prey had left. So he ran to chase her. He had a sharp nose so he knew what direction his prey ran.
Timun Emas was just a girl while Buta Ijo was a monster so he could easily catch her up. When he was just several steps behind Timun Emas quickly spread the seeds of cucumber. In seconds they turned into many vines of cucumber. The exhausted Buta Ijo was very thirsty so he grabbed and ate them. When Buta Ijo was busy eating cucumber Timun Emas could run away.
But soon Buta Ijo realized and started running again. When he was just several steps behind Timun Emas threw her bamboo needles. Soon they turned into dense bamboo trees. Buta Ijo found it hard to pass. It took him some time to break the dense bamboo forest. Meanwhile Timun Emas could run farther.
Buta Ijo chased her again. When he almost catch her again and again Timun Emas threw her dressing. This time it turned into a lake. Buta Ijo was busy to save himself so Timun Emas ran way. But Buta Ijo could overcome it and continued chasing her.
Finally when Timun Emas was almost caught she threw her salt. Soon the land where Buta Ijo stood turned into ocean. Buta Ijo was drowned and died instantly.
Timun Emas was thankful to god and came back to her home.

Roro Jonggrang
Long time ago, there was a kingdom named
Prambanan. All the people of Prambanan lived peacefully. But then, Prambanan
kingdom was attacked and occupied by the Pengging kingdom. Prambanan then was
ruled by Bandung Bondowoso of Pengging kingdom. He was a mean king. He also had
great supernatural power. His soldiers were not only humans, but also genies.
The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named Loro Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. “You’re very beautiful. Would you be my queen?” asked Bandung Bondowoso. Loro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t like Bandung Bondowoso because he was a mean person. She wanted to refuse, but she afraid that Bandung Bondowoso would be angry and endangered the people of Prambanan. Then, she came up with a plan. “If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand temples for me in just one night,” said Loro Jonggrang. “What? That’s impossible!” said Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He consulted with his advisor. “Your Majesty can asked the genies to help built the temples,” said the advisor.
So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his entire genies soldier and commanded them to help him built a thousand temples. The genies worked in unbelievable speed. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from her servant that the building of a thousand temples was almost finished. She was so worried. But again, she came up with a great idea. She asked all of her servants to help her. “Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Please hurry up!” said Loro Jonggrang. “Burn the straw and make some noise pounding the mortar, quickly.” All those servants did what Loro Jonggrang ordered them; burning straw and pounding the mortar, making the genies think that the sun is going to rise.
“It’s already dawn. We have to go,” said the leader of the genies to Bandung Bondowoso. All the genies immediately stopped their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of. They didn’t know that the light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun.
Bandung Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving. He was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang had just tricked him. “You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple.” He pointed his finger to Loro Jonggrang and said some mantras. Magically, Loro Jonggrang’s body turned into stone. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is called Loro Jonggrang temple.

. The Fox and the Crow
A
crow, perched in a tree with a piece of cheese in his beak, attracted the eye
and nose of a fox. "If you can sing as prettily as you sit," said the
fox, "then you are the prettiest singer within my scent and sight."
The fox had read somewhere, and somewhere, and somewhere else, that praising
the voice of a crow with a cheese in his beak would make him drop the cheese
and sing. But this is not what happened to this particular crow in this
particular case.
"They
say you are sly and they say you are crazy," said the crow, having
carefully removed the cheese from his beak with the claws of one foot,
"but you must be nearsighted as well. Warblers wear gay hats and colored
jackets and bright vest, and they are a dollar a hundred. I wear black and I am
unique.
"I
am sure you are," said the fox, who was neither crazy nor nearsighted, but
sly. "I recognize you, now that I look more closely, as the most famed and
talented of all birds, and I fain would hear you tell about yourself, but I am
hungry and must go."
"Tarry awhile," said the
crow quickly, "and share my lunch with me." Whereupon he tossed the
cunning fox the lion's share of the cheese, and began to tell about himself.
"A ship that sails without a crow's nest sails to doom," he said.
"Bars may come and bars may go, but crow bars last forever. I am the
pioneer of flight, I am the map maker. Last, but never least, my flight is
known to scientists and engineers, geometricians, and scholar, as the shortest
distance between two points. Any two points," he concluded arrogantly.
"Oh, every two points, I am
sure," said the fox. "And thank you for the lion's share of what I
know you could not spare." And with this he trotted away into the woods,
his appetite appeased, leaving the hungry crow perched forlornly in the tree.

The Wolf and the Dog
Once there was a wolf who was nearly
dead with hunger. He was very thin, so that the outline of his bones could be
seen clearly beneath his thinning coat of hair. With hardly enough energy to
walk, the wolf had little hope of finding food. As he lay beneath a large tree,
a dog out for a walk noticed him. Seeing how thin and hungry-looking the wolf
was, the dog felt sorry for him and said, "You are in terrible shape! You
look as if you haven't eaten for many days."
"You're right," said the
wolf. "I haven't eaten because you and your friends are doing such a good
job of guarding the sheep. Now I am so weak that I have little hope of finding
food. I think I will surely die."
Then why not join us? Asked the dog.
"I work regularly and I eat regularly. You could do the same. I will
arrange it. You can help me and the other dogs guard the sheep. In that way, we
won't have to worry about your stealing the sheep any more and you won't have
to worry about going hungry any more. It's a good deal for both of us."
The wolf thought it over for a few
minutes and then decided that the dog was right. So they went off together
toward the ranch house where the dog lived. But, as they were walking, the wolf
noticed that the hair on a certain part of the dog's neck was very thin. He was
curious about this, for the dog had such a beautiful coat every where else.
Finally, he asked the dog about it.
"Oh, don't worry about
that," said the dog. "It's the place where the collar rubs on my neck
when my master chains me up at night."
Chained up!" cried the wolf,
"Do you mean that you are chained up at night? If I come to live with you,
will I be chained up at night too?"
That's right," answered the
dog. "But, You'll get used to it soon enough. I hardly think about it
anymore."
"But, if I am chained up, then
I won't be able to walk when I want to take a walk or to run where I want to
run," the wolf said. "If I come to live with you, I won't be free
anymore." After saying this, the wolf turned and ran away.
"The dog called after the wolf,
saying, "Wait! Come back! I may not be able to do everything I want to do,
but I'm healthy, well-fed, and I have a warm place to sleep. You are too
worried about keeping alive to enjoy life. I'm more free than you are."

far from this place is the city of London where John, Wendy and Michael Darling
lived. They really loved the story of Peter. One day Peter pan appeared and
asked the children to fly to Neverland. They were excited to see the scenery
and beauty of Neverland. Then, they were surprised to know the existence of a
cruel pirate called Captain Hook. One day Captain Hook captured Tinker Bell and
forced her to show Peter Pan’s place. In doing so all Peter’s friends, the
Darlings were captured and taken to the pirate ship. Captain Hook frightened
the children by putting them on the plank.
Suddenly, Peter Pan appeared and
stopped everything. In a fierce duel, he threw Hook and all the pirates
overboard. Hook was chased away by the crocodile, and nobody cared to save him.
The Darlings were so happy and
