CONVERSATION ANALYSIS
This Conversation is taken from the film Love, Rosie adapted from Cecelia Ahern’s Novel. In this conversation Mr. Alex is talking to Ms. Rosie about Scholarship to Harvard.

Extract 1 (SCENE 5 – DRAWING ROOM – AT THE CAFÉ – AFTERNOON)
01 Alex           : I’ve got News. (.2)
02 Rosie          : Me, too =
03 Alex           : = read it. (.7)
04 Rosie          : Scholarship to Harvard ! (.4)
05                      Alex, that’s so great. Congratulation. =
06 Alex           := it’s unbelievable, right ? (.2)
07                    Have yo:::u heard back from Boston College, Yet? (.3)
08 Rosie          : No.

Analysis of Conversation
1.      Turn Taking
We can notice that this data extract consists two turn at talk from different speaker. Mr. Alex uses rising intonation and eye contact to signal the end of the turn while Ms. Rosie uses falling intonation

2.      Adjacency Pairs
In this brief sequence, Mr. Alex utters the first pair part (FPP) I’ve got news in line 1 this type of utterance may be defined as giving information. In the second line Ms. Rosie responds with the second pair part (SPP) Me, too of response to the giving information too. In this case, the SPP is Preferred Response because the statement is accepted by Ms. Rosie who said Me, too. they had previously planned to tell each other their news.

 there is no insertion sequence in this conversation.

4.      Feedback
In this conversation Ms. Rosie gives feedback to Mr. Alex’s statement by saying Me, too. And Mr. Alex gives feedback with ask by saying Read it. Ms. Rosie gives feedback again by saying Scholarship to Harvard ! and she continues her utterance by saying Alex, that’s so great. Congratulations. Mr. Alex gives feedback again by saying it’s unbelievable, right ? and he continues his utterance to ask Ms. Rosie by saying have you heard back from Boston College, yet? And Ms. Rosie gives feedback by saying No. so in this conversation each other to give feedback.

6.      Structural Organization
The conversation in extract 1 does not have an opening of the conversation. In this case, Mr. Alex tell directly about the purpose of coming to the café. He told Rosie to read a letter, and Ms. Rosie responses with rising intonation as the signal socked and saying congratulations responses about her “pleasure”.
