ABSTRACT
As we know English an international
language in the world. English is a media to communicate. Nowadays most of
information about development of sciences and technology in transferred in
English. Vocabulary is important to be mastered by the students. The objectives
of the research are to describe whether or not the average score of students`
vocabulary mastery is higher
which are taught by using their reading ability of analytical exposition text .
The research also to know and describe whether there is the correlation between
students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability in reading analytical exposition
text, and to know whether there is a
significant difference between the average score in data analysis and data
normality who are taught by using different technique at STKIP PGRI Bandar
Lampung in 2015/2016.
In this research, the writer found that
the students’ vocabulary mastery should be increased. And many students rarely
use English in their activity and they got difficulties in comprehending
reading analytical exposition text. They also find difficulties in mastering
vocabulary of English.
To solve the problem above the writer
use technique to teach tenses, by using ability in reading. And the writer
chose the title “The
correlation between students’ vocabulary
mastery and their reading ability of analytical exposition text at the fourth
semester of English education department at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in
2015/2016.
B. INTRODUCTION
Language has a lot
advantages in real life for instance. Language is used for talking with people
and expressing the ideas. Besides, languages can also be used to transfer
knowledge and culture. It means that language is an instrument of communication
that should be learned by all people, because learning a language means
learning to communicate. As we know English an international language in the
world. English is a media to communicate. Nowadays most of information about
development of sciences and technology in transferred in English.
Vocabulary is important to be mastered
by the students. It is required to make the student have good understanding of
English text or when someone speak in English. It is also important the
students to have a good ability and reading, reading is an active skill that
involves question, predicting, checking, and asking oneself question. They can
improve the vocabulary of English also, but sometimes the students would be
translated word by word to know information of reading text when they are
answering the question.
Based on preliminary research at English
Education Department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The writer that found the
students’ ability in reading analytical exposition text need to be improved.
The writer identified the problem of the research as follow:
1. the
students get difficulties in comprehending in analytical exposition text.
2. the
students get difficulties in mastering vocabulary
Based on identification of problem, the
writer focus on the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their
reading ability of analytical exposition text at the fourth semester of English
education department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2015/2016
Considering to the problem correlation
between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of analytical exposition
text. The problem of the research as follows:
1. Is
there any correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading
ability of analytical exposition text ?
2. Is
there any positive and significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery
and their reading ability of analytical exposition text ?
Considering to the problem correlation
between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of analytical
exposition text. The uses of research are:
1. To
give information to English lecturers about the correlation between students’
vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of analytical exposition text
2. To
give motivate students in learning English, especially about their vocabulary
mastery and their reading ability of analytical exposition text.
C. LITERATURE REVIEWS
The
Concept of Language
A language is a system of signs used to
communicate message. For all of those kinds, human spoken language is the most
developed, used and studied undoubtedly. Human language is an oral auditory communication
system, because it has many advantages over other possible methods of
communication.
1. According
to brown (1994: 22) language is a fundamental part of total human behavior, and
behaviorists have examined it as such and sought to formulate consistent
theories of first language acquisition.
2. According
to Dalton and Seidlhofer (2004: 7) language is used not only to communicate,
but also to establish a sense of community.
3. According
to Murcia (2001: 359) states “foreign language is a language studied in a
environment. Where it is not primary vehicle for daily interaction and where
input in that language
A consolidation
of the definitions of language yields the following composite definition:
1. Language
is systematic and generative.
2. Language
is a set of arbitrary symbols.
3. Those
symbols are primarily vocal but may also be visual.
4. The
symbols have conventionalized mean lings to which they refer.
5. Language
is used for communication.
6. Language
operates in a speech community or culture.
7. Language
is essentially human, although possibly not limited to human.
8.
Language
is acquired by all people in much the same ways – language and language
learning both have universal characteristics.

Based on the
explanation above, we can conclude that language is very important in our life.
We can show our idea, thinking, dream or everything by expressing with our
language. The writer cannot imagine how the world’s situation without language,
language makes human’s life better.
Concept
of vocabulary
Vocabulary is important for us to use
language. Vocabulary can help the students increase their skill such as
listening, speaking, writing and reading abilities. Richards and Rogers
(2001:37) states “vocabulary was one of the most important aspect of foreign
learning”. It means that vocabulary is used as the understanding between people
who want to communicate to transfer their mind, ideas, messages, information
and etc. According to Cameron (2001:95) states that “vocabulary is fundamental
to using the foreign language as discourse, since vocabulary is both learnt
from participating in discourse and is essential to participating in it”.
Concept
of reading
Reading is one of subject of English
that must be mastered, because by reading English text the students can get
knowledge and information and it not easy, moreover in complicated English
text. The students need more understanding about main ideas from reading the
text. It supported by brown (2001:298) “reading ability will develop best in
associationbest in associating writing, listening, speaking, reading,
activities”.
Concept
of analytical exposition text
Based on Nuryani (2008) explain that :
analytical exposition is a text that elaborates the writer’s idea about the
phenomenon surrounding”. Mark Anderson (2006:122) states that “analytical
exposition is a piece of text that presents one side of an issue. The purpose
of analytical exposition text is to persuade the reader or listener by
presenting one side of an argument”. Emi Emilia (2011:104) also states that
“analytical exposition text is a text which aims to ensure that something is
true or not true, or that something is good or bad or even something that’s
important or not important depending on the topic”.
Language features of analytical
exposition is essentially similar to the characteristic of argumentative text
in general, namely : Emi Emilia 2011:105) focus on specific topic:
1. Using
mental verb: I believe, I think, I like…;
2. Using
logical connectives to maintain the relationship between the ideas expressed,
including:
Temporal
connectives: first, second, third, and so on;
Causal
connectives: to declare causation: because, leads
to, the consequence of (additives can lead to many disease);
Comparative
connectives: however, on the other hand;
Connectives
in the concluding statement.
3. Using
mental processes .
4. Using
material processes.
5. Using
simple present tense.
6. Using
relational processes.
7. Using
internal conjunction to state argument.
Harmer (2001:203) states that “if
readers and listeners do not know half of words in a text, they will have great
difficulty and indulgent the text whole. To be successful they have to
recognize a high proportion of the vocabulary without consciously”.
Nunan (2003:134) states that “vocabulary
is important to see fluency as being related to each of the four skill of
listening, speaking, reading and writing with fluency need to be developed
independently in each of these skill”.

RESEARCH METHOD
The writer would know the correlation
between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of analytical
exposition text. So that, the writer used descriptive quantitative method. Descriptive
quantitative method means the data that was collected based on numbering form. In
this research there are two variables, they are:
1. The
independent variable is the students’ vocabulary mastery (X)
2. The
dependent variable is students’ ability in reading analytical exposition text
(Y)

The writer took some as
the sample of research. Suharsimi Arikunto (2006:134) states that “if the
population of the students more than 100, it can take among 10-15% or more. If
the population less than 100 students. It was beteer to take the all of subject
and it is calling the population of research”.
Based on statement
above, writer took 33% from 103 students that are 34 students. it means that
the writer took 34 students for the sample that would be investigated of
researched.
To know the reliability of the test
items, the writer used split-half technique with the steps as follows:
1. Trying
out the instrument test items to the students out of the sample research.
2. Dividing
the test into odd and even items.
3. Analyzing
the test result by using Product Moment Formula.
4. Using spearman-Brown formula, as follows:

The writer consult the
result with criterion as follow:
Reliability
coefficient 0.800- 1.00 is very high
Reliability
coefficient 0.600-0.800 is high
Reliability
coefficient 0.400-0.600 is middle

DISCUSSION
Reading English text is
important for us, because by reading English text student can get information
and knowledge. In reading English text, there are many texts that should be
comprehends by the students. To able to comprehend analytical exposition text,
the students should have adequate vocabulary. The writer found that there was correlation
between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of analytical
exposition text. Vocabulary and reading cannot be separated, because both of
them relate and each other. Vocabulary is very important to read comprehension.
Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of
the word mean. “If readers and listeners do know half of word s in a text, they
will have great difficulty in indulgent the text whole. To be successful they
have to recognize a high proportion of the vocabulary without consciously”. (Harmer,
2001:203).
Based on the result of
the test, the result of calculating by using product moment formula was 0.642.
Then, the writer consulted with rtable significant level 1% got
0.436. So, rcount was higher than rtable (0.642>0.436).
It means that there is positive and significant correlation between students’
vocabulary mastery and
their reading ability of analytical exposition text at the fourth semester of
English education department of stkip pgri bandar lampung in 2015/2016.
F.
CONCLUSION
Based on the result of
the data analysis and hypothesis by using product moment formula, the writer would
conclude that:
1.
There is a correlation
between students’ vocabulary and their ability of reading ability analytical
exposition text, it is gotten rcount₌0.642
≠ 0. it is showed that there is the correlation between students’ vocabulary
and their ability of reading ability analytical exposition text.
2.
There is a positive and
significant correlation between students’ vocabulary and their ability of
reading ability analytical exposition text, it can be see that rcount₌0.642 with N₌34 for significance level 1 %, it was obtained rcount₌0.642 that
was higher than rtable₌0.436. it means there is significant
correlation between students’ vocabulary and their ability of reading ability
analytical exposition text.
G.
SUGGESTIONS
Based on the
conclusion, the writer would like to give some suggestions which may be helpful
to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability of
analytical exposition text at the fourth semester of English Department at
STKIP-PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2015/2016 as follows:
1.
For the Lecturers
·
The English lecturers
should give more motivation and chance to the students to improve their reading
comprehension.
·
The English lecturers
can give more attention to the students’ ability in using English that is by giving
many practices. Especially vocabulary because it is hard to be learn and it’s
very important to develop students’ ability in English.
2.
For the Students
·
The student should not
be afraid in learning English, especially in learning vocabulary because
vocabulary is very important part in English.
·
The students should
read many kinds of English text or English books to improve their vocabulary
·
The students should
focus when answer the questions.
