THE
FRAME OF THEORIES, THINKING AND HYPOTESIS
2.1 Frame of Theories
2.1.1
Concept of writing
The
concept of writing is a broad and multifaceted one, encompassing various forms,
styles, and purposes. At its core, writing is a means of communication and
expression using a system of symbols, such as letters or characters, to convey
thoughts, ideas, and information. Here are some key aspects of the concept of
writing:
Writing
serves as a tool for communication, allowing individuals to share their
thoughts, emotions, and information with others. It can be a form of one-way
communication, such as books or articles, or a means of interactive
communication, as seen in letters, emails, and online forums.
Writing
provides a medium for creative expression, allowing individuals to convey their
imagination, stories, and ideas in a tangible form. It allows writers to
explore their feelings, perspectives, and unique voices, fostering a rich
tapestry of literary diversity.
One
of the fundamental purposes of writing is to transfer information. This can
range from conveying simple facts to complex analyses and arguments. Technical
and scientific writing, for example, aims to communicate information in a clear
and precise manner.
Writing
is often used to persuade or argue a point. Persuasive writing seeks to
influence the reader's beliefs or actions, while argumentative writing presents
a logical and reasoned discussion on a particular topic.
Writing
is a crucial tool for recording information, documenting events, and preserving
knowledge for future generations. Legal documents, historical records, and
scientific journals are examples of how writing serves as a means of
documentation.
Writing
plays a vital role in preserving and transmitting culture. Literature,
folklore, and religious texts are examples of written forms that contribute to
cultural continuity. Socially, writing helps establish and maintain societal
norms, values, and systems of governance.
Writing
takes various forms, adapting to different purposes and audiences. This
includes fiction and non-fiction literature, poetry, essays, technical manuals,
and more. Each form of writing has its own conventions, styles, and structures tailored
to its intended function.
Writing
is an iterative process that often involves multiple drafts, revisions, and
edits. This refining process is essential for improving clarity, coherence, and
overall quality. In the modern era, writing has evolved with technology.
Digital platforms, blogging, social media, and multimedia elements have
expanded the ways in which people communicate through writing.
2.1.2
Concept of Peer Review
Peer
review is a process used in scholarly and scientific communities to ensure the
quality and validity of research and academic work. The concept involves
subjecting manuscripts, research papers, or other scholarly work to evaluation
by experts in the same field or discipline. These experts, often referred to as
peers, are individuals who have a similar level of expertise and knowledge in
the subject matter.
A peer-reviewed publication is also sometimes
referred to as a scholarly publication. The peer-review process subjects an
author's scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are
experts in the same field (peers) and is considered necessary to ensure
academic scientific quality.
Peer
review is the process by which research is assessed for quality, relevancy, and
accuracy. In a peer-reviewed, or refereed journal, each manuscript submitted to
the publisher is first reviewed (usually) anonymously by a group of experts -
peers in the same field of study.
Emphasize
to students that peer review is not just a course requirement: it is an
essential part of the writing process that all successful writers engage in at
some point. students may not realize the extent to which scholars and other
professionals practice peer review as an integral part of producing effective
writing in their fields. Consider explaining why, as a scholar, you find peer
review helpful-even when you do not agree with or appreciate every comment made
by a peer- reviewer. For example, you might tell them about a specific instance
when a reader’s comments helped you to clarify and strengthen your writing.
students producing academic and professional writing
generally involves three steps: drafting, revising, and editing. Peer review is
often most helpful to student writers when it is utilized between the drafting
and revision stages, or after each student has produced a complete draft, but
while there is still time to make substantial changes. A writer might learn
from peer-reviewers, for example, that a paper’s introduction is its strongest
point, or that the paper’s main point or thesis is not yet clear, or that there
are “gaps” in the logic or the support that detract from the paper’s
effectiveness, or that a paper’s conclusion presents an interesting idea that
leaves the reader with unanswered questions. The purpose of peer review as a
prelude to revision is to help the writer determine which parts of the paper
are effective as is, and which are unclear, incomplete, or unconvincing.
2.1.3
Concept of Teaching Writing
Writing is a crucial skill that students
need to master for academic success and effective communication. The ability to
express ideas coherently in writing is essential in various academic and
professional settings. This proposal aims to investigate the influence of peer
review on the writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMKN 9 Bandar Lampung
during the academic year 2023/2024.
Objective: The primary objective of this
study is to explore and analyze the impact of incorporating peer review into
the writing curriculum on students' writing proficiency. The specific goals are
as follows:

assess the baseline writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMKN 9 Bandar
Lampung.

an effective instructional strategy that promotes collaborative learning and
enhances writing skills. By engaging students in the process of reviewing and
providing constructive feedback on their peers' writing, they not only gain
insights into their own writing but also develop critical thinking and
analytical skills. This study aims to investigate whether the incorporation of
peer review in the writing curriculum positively influences students' writing
proficiency and overall writing experience.
Based on the statement above that write text
in English correctly and good isdesired by the students to support students'
career and studies, the selection of topics of interest will add to the
attraction of students to write own words, details about character, setting,
plot, dialogue, or information." It means that peer review can help the students to remember what they
have read and the students rewrite with their own words.
